NSD Deputy Superintendent retiring after 35-years of service in education

Posted on June 30

Northland School Division (NSD) announces with mixed emotions the upcoming retirement of Deputy Superintendent Dr. Tim Stensland. Dr. Stensland has dedicated 35-years in the field of education. An education career that all began with the Northland School Division.

After earning a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from the University of Calgary (U of C), Tim’s first teaching position was with Kateri School in Trout Lake (formerly with NSD). He then taught in Dawson Creek, British Columbia and then in Calgary. While in Calgary, Dr. Stensland, earned his way to becoming a Vice-Principal, a Principal and then a Recruitment and Staffing Consultant with Calgary Board of Education (CBE).

Those life experiences helped him land a Senior Manager position with Alberta Education. While working as a Senior Manager with Alberta Education, Tim supported NSD through many programs such as the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Community Based Teacher Education Program, the Northland Teacher Induction Program, Supporting Beginning Teachers Program and the Northern Student Teacher Bursary.

When he returned to NSD as an Associate Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Stensland played an important role in rolling out a Vision for Technology, Teaching, Learning and Leading in NSD. The vision continues to help NSD leverage the benefits of technology to support the student learning experience. It also contributed to the creation of Northland Online School.

Tim is an excellent example of lifelong learning. He completed a Master in Education (M.Ed.) from Gonzaga University, completed Master of Business Administration (MBA) course work from the U of C and University of Phoenix, senior manager development program with Alberta Education/University of Alberta and an Education Doctorate from the U of C.

“Dr. Stensland has done outstanding work during his time with Northland School Division,” said Cal Johson, Acting Superintendent of Schools/CEO. “It has been a pleasure to work with someone so dedicated to helping Northland students succeed. I would like to personally thank Tim for all of the advice and knowledge. I will be forever grateful.”

“The Board of Trustees of NSD thank Dr. Stensland for his dedication and commitment to helping Northland students achieve success,” said Cathy Wanyandie. “We wish him well as he prepares for his next journey in life.”

Dr. Stensland will continue in his role as Deputy Superintendent until August 31, 2023.
