Helen Akranis appointed Gift Lake School Principal

Northland School Division (NSD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Helen Akranis as the Principal of Gift Lake School.

Helen was appointed Acting Principal in December 2024. She brings 24 years of teaching experience, including 23 years with Northland School Division. Known for her commitment to education, she is dedicated to helping students reach their full potential and inspiring a love for learning.

“It is with enthusiasm and a deep sense of honour that I will remain as Principal of Gift Lake School,” said Akranis. “I look forward to starting the year working with students, staff, and the community to further enhance our school's academic success, while also enriching the Métis culture within our school.”

“Helen understands the context and our overarching goals at Northland School Division,” said Cal Johnson, Superintendent of Schools/CEO. “During her time as Acting Principal, she demonstrated leadership, dedication, and a strong commitment to students and staff. Helen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia University and a Bachelor of Education degree from King’s University. She is currently pursuing a Master of Education, further enhancing her ability to serve students, families, and the broader community.

Outside the classroom, Helen enjoys expressing her creativity through woodworking, beading, and crocheting. These hobbies allow her to connect with cultural traditions and inspire creativity in others, deepening her connection to the community.
