Posted on June 26

Tansi, Edlanat’e, Greetings everyone,
As the 2024–2025 school year wraps up, I want to say thank you to all the parents, guardians, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community members, and education partners. Northland students are thriving because of your involvement throughout the year. Whether you joined a school event, took part in a school council or principal's advisory committee, or supported learning at home, you helped make a real difference. We have much to celebrate as a school division. Your commitment and efforts have contributed to these accomplishments:
Highlights from 2024–2025:
- We celebrated 68 graduates from Anzac, Calling Lake, Wabasca-Desmarais, Paddle Prairie, and Northland Online School.
- On May 24th, Northland Online School celebrated its first graduating class. This school year was the first time the online school offered grade 12.
- Graduation rates continued to rise, with nearly double the number of students graduating compared to previous years.
- Northland School Division’s new three-year Education Plan is guided by community feedback. Parents, guardians, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community members, and staff are helping bring the priorities and strategies in the plan to life.
- We launched the Superintendent’s Elders and Knowledge Keepers Advisory Council and the Superintendent’s Youth Council to help guide reconciliation efforts and student voice in decision-making.
- Northland was recognized with a provincial award from the Public School Boards’ Association of Alberta for advancing Truth and Reconciliation.
- The new Mistassiniy School officially opened, offering modern spaces that support learning today and into the future.
What’s ahead in 2025–2026:
- Continued implementation of the Collaborative Response Model to support student learning through shared planning and early intervention.
- Deeper focus on land-based learning, Indigenizing curriculum, and building connections through ceremony and culture.
- Ongoing support for literacy, numeracy, and student wellness across all grades.
- Collegiate programming to help students graduate with job-ready skills or post-secondary credits.
- A focus on digital confidence, with staff and students learning how to use data and digital tools responsibly.
- Continued development of school-based leadership.
Please enjoy your time with family and friends. Have a safe and healthy summer break.
Hai, Hai, Mahsi cho, thank you.
Sincerely,
Cal Johnson
